Although dogs come in an extremely wide range of shapes and sizes, the gestation period from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane is within the same sort of time frame. Most dogs are pregnant for between 58 days and 64 days. The due date varies slightly depending on the breed and size of dog as well as the size of the litter she is carrying, but vast majority of dogs will give birth on the 63rd day or approximately 9 weeks.

Much like humans rely on sight to make sense of their surroundings, dogs rely on their sense of smell. By smelling something, dogs are able to decode a lot more information about it than by simply staring. That’s because the scent-detecting membrane in their noses is about 60x bigger than ours – a human’s membrane is about the size of a postage stamp and dogs’ are the size of a piece of paper.

The Newfoundland Dog came over with fishers from Europe beginning in the 18th century. At the time, the dogs selected for breeding were those showing the greatest aptitude for work with the fisher, and exhibiting exceptional strength, endurance and intelligence. St. John’s Newfoundland breeds have developed into other, more known breeds. In this case, the Canadian rooted canine is closely related to the Labrador family. When the American Kennel Club (AKC) first began classifying dogs, there were two Groups: Sporting and Non-Sporting. The Sporting Group used to include Hounds and Terriers. These breeds were later split into their own Group, though. Sporting group dogs have remarkable instincts, both in water and woods. They’re naturally active and alert with stable temperaments.

Basset hounds are easy to spot with their long body, droopy ears and short legs. Basset hounds have a lovely temperament but like all dogs they can sometimes be a bit stubborn. They have an incredible sense of smell which helps them when they are hunting. Basset hounds need a lot of recall training because they will often be tempted to run away chasing a scent.
